In this passage, what I hear coming through is the very last part of God's statement to Abraham: "because you have obeyed me."
It is clear that have all received this blessing through one man's faithfulness and obedience ages ago. How would our lives be different to day if Abraham had made a different choice? It makes me realize the potential widespread ramifications of my choices to obey or not.

I think Jesus says this tounge and cheek. In fact, most scholars are clear that "cast him out..." is an addition by Matthew. He does so in 5 places in his Gospel and it is found nowhere else but once in Luke.

Like you, I have a hard time taking that phrase at face value. But I wonder if "a miserable death" could not be likened to a life without God? Living without relationship with God could be like a miserable, waking death - in my opinion.

This reading really hits home with me... i am more aware than ever that i have the same kind of fear ..and the conflict of realizing that I don't have as much trust as I "should". I'm working on changing "should trust" to "I can trust" which is a discipline. Thanks for your comments Jay!

Just a thought here, but a fun fund raiser I have seen in the past is to "sell a smack." The notion is that for $1 or $5 or $10 you get to take a sledge hammer and hit part of the building as part of the demoliton process. Generally, I understand that the contractor for the destruction "supervises" these couple of hours and only allows folks to hit where it's safe so no one is hurt by a crumbling building. Goggles required. I would certainly pay for the chance. Also, we need to think about what, if anything, might be taken from the old house and sold or installed in a future building or elsewhere as a reminder of our past. Yes, I am a sentimentalist. Perhaps the mantle or some door hardware? Just something for continuity's sake.
Peace, y'all.
